Doctor visit cost calculator

France has three reimbursement tiers (secteur 1, 2, 3) and the famous "médecin traitant" gatekeeping system. Tourists without a Carte Vitale see the full sticker price. This tool tells you what you'll really pay.

What this tool actually solves

Tourists are often surprised by what looks like a cheap visit (€26.50 sticker for a GP) but may pay €50–€80 in practice, or €200–€400 at a hospital emergency. The reimbursement math (Carte Vitale) covers residents well, but tourists rely on travel insurance. This tool gives the real cost in your specific case.

How to read the result

The result gives you: the sticker price, the reimbursed portion, the out-of-pocket cost, and what your insurance (Carte Vitale / mutuelle / travel insurance) covers.

Limitations

Tariffs change. The 2025 GP base is €26.50; specialists vary by specialty and sector. Hospital emergency tariffs include a "forfait urgences" of €19.61 (2025).

FAQ

Can I see any doctor without a Carte Vitale?
Yes. Without a Carte Vitale, the doctor bills you directly. The fee is the same sticker. Pay by card or cash. You can ask for a "feuille de soins" (treatment form) for reimbursement via your travel insurance or EHIC.
What if I need a specialist?
In France, you typically need a referral from your médecin traitant for specialists (dermatologist, gastro, etc.). Without one, reimbursement is reduced. SOS Médecins will often refer you to a specialist directly.
