Cycling & Vélib' in Paris

Vélib' Métropole has 1,400 stations across Paris and 65 suburbs. Theft of unattended bikes is rising — 8–10% of long-dock bikes disappear. This tool tells you which lanes to use, where theft is highest, and how to plan a ride.

What this tool actually solves

Paris has 1,000+ km of cycling lanes but only ~50% are protected. Tourists who take a Vélib' for a day ride often (a) cycle on the pavement, illegal (b) forget to lock it back and lose the bike (c) ride through the Marais pedestrian streets and get caught by police. This tool answers: lane types, helmet rule, theft prevention, station density, plus rules of the road.

How to read the result

Three lines: route suggestion, safety, Vélib' tip.

Limitations

The Paris cycling map changes quarterly — new coronapistes, removals. The Vélib' operator (Smovengo since 2018) updates the docking system often. The exact station availability changes hour by hour.

FAQ

Do I need a helmet?
Helmet is not legally required for adults in France but is for under-12 (since 2017). Insurance-wise, wear one. Most Parisians don't — the cycle is short.
Is the Vélib' theft-prone?
Yes, especially at night and at unattended stations. The docking system is electronic — the bike stops working 5 min after being undocked outside a Vélib' station. Theft is rare because the bike is "dead" once off-station. You cannot ride a Vélib' home and lock it in your apartment.
